Racquetball Faith

Racquetball Recently a dear friend, Dr. Chuck Stecker, who is the founder of A Chosen Generation, (learn more at www.achosengeneration.org),  wrote an article that resonated with me for a variety of reasons!

  • Chuck and his family were a part of our church family at International Christian Fellowship in Rome. At that time he was known to us as Lt. Col. Chuck Stecker and he, his wife Billie and their sons Chad & Courtney were actively engaged in serving with us! We had so much fun together and to be with them on their spiritual journey has been so rewarding.
  • I am an old racquetball junkie! I still have fond memories .. and a few nightmares honestly ... of my racquetball days of the 70's & 80's!
  • The truth that he writes about profoundly spoke to me!

Here is an excerpt of his article.

'A few years ago, I was in New England at the church of a man who had become a very good friend. Not only was he an exceptional Pastor, but he was (and still is) a very, very good racquetball player. In the course of our time together, we discussed the faith of the next generation, as well as racquetball.

I asked him how many racquetball courts were at his club. He immediately said that there were four. I then asked him how many courts were at his club when it first opened. He looked at me with a quizzical look and said that he thought there had been as many as twelve courts at one time. I then asked him how many clubs had been closed in his area and now converted for other uses.

I said that I remembered when the big racquetball wave hit Omaha and all the clubs were built. Most of those are now closed as well. The facilities that still have racquetball courts now use them for more "practical purposes." Some are aerobic rooms with bikes. Others are converted to play areas for kids. I asked him why he thought all the clubs closed.

The answer seemed pretty simple to me.

Most guys played racquetball with their peers and not their children, so the game did not pass on to the next generation.  When guys wanted to play racquetball, they always chose to play with someone more of their own caliber instead of the painstaking and time-consuming process of teaching their own kids.

The same is true of our faith.

Most men would rather deal with other men - their peers - and not take the time for their own kids.

Perhaps that is why we are now closing churches faster than we closed the racquetball clubs several years ago.

We can do without racquetball clubs. Can our kids really live without their faith?'

Profoundly spoken!

Now can this challenge be powerfully received into my heart ... and yours?

What are we doing to invest in the next generation?

Chuck's final question haunts me and I hope it calls out to you as well ...

What will we do ... seriously ... what will we do?

Freedom ... REALLY?

July 4th S This is the weekend that America celebrates freedom and we recall the great price that we have paid as a nation to provide, protect and preserve it.

In reality, freedom is intended to give us the opportunity to achieve and excel at the highest level!

Tragically, however, we have too often used our freedom to accumulate and as a result, to enslave ourselves again!

This may well be the moment to ask ...

Freedom ... REALLY?

  • Did men and women fight and die so that we could have it all ... or give it all?
  • Was it their intent to secure our license to live like we want ... or to give us liberty to live as we should?
  • What about their gift to us of priceless freedom ... are we failing or fulfilling our responsibility?

Freedom ... REALLY!!

So, this weekend as you observe fantastic fireworks displays, hear the songs of freedom ring out, see families having fun together, take a moment to reflect, remember and resolve deep within to do all you can to ensure that what we have is ...

Freedom ... REALLY!!!

It's in our hands now!!!

EVERYWHERE!

Prayer nations   One of my great joys is sharing in God's great activity!

We are privileged to travel to many European countries and to meet people who come from well ...

EVERYWHERE!

Recently I was in the Grand Canaries celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Christian Life Center in Las Palmas and what a celebration it was!!

People coming from 27 different nations all sharing faith, life & ministry together!

What I can declare to you is that all over the earth the Spirit is moving  ... and I do mean ...

EVERYWHERE!!

However, it must also be said that everywhere ...

  • Problems persist - and the difficulties are huge and yet ...
  • People pray - and the challenges are overcome so that ...
  • Possibilities prevail - and I mean in the most incredible way ...

EVERYWHERE!!!

It is my hope that you are experiencing this where you are and if not, I want to encourage you to become fully expectant that God will visit you, your family & your church in a special way!

His promise is sure and His supernatural activity surrounds us ...

EVERYWHERE!!!!

Heads up everyone!

Making Oueselves Ready!

Swedish Summer Home Summer time in Sweden … what a thought!

Bright red summer houses in picturesque surroundings, peaceful walks, refreshing bicycle rides, long nights … and plenty more!

Because we are sharing in the ministry of Europaporten Church in Malmo we are in Sweden two weekends a month so we are privileged to enjoy all that … and we will take it all in!

At the same time, we know these times of relaxation will indeed ‘make us ready’ for the whirlwind of activity that will begin in September.

So this summer we have decided that our ministry theme at the church will be, ‘Making Ourselves Ready’! Together, we will be discovering what we can do to prepare ourselves in advance for the great activity of God that we know is coming our way!

Relaxing & getting ready … nice combination huh!

That’s our Swedish summer plan!!

Perhaps you can be a little bit Swedish this summer and join us in this endeavor.

‘Making Ourselves Ready’ … a great idea no matter where you spend your summer!

Just for fun!!!

Needing A Little 'White Space'!

Frantic I do not remember when I was first introduced to this concept but I do remember the powerful, positive impact it had on my life!

The idea is simple!

Book publishers are aware of the need to create 'white space' in their publications. They purposefully provide borders, leave open space for chapter headings and utilize photos or artwork, all in an attempt to be 'attractive to the eyes'. If the pages are full of endless words with no breaks or 'white space', the reading becomes overwhelming! Your eyes have no rest & the whole reading experience breaks down!

Needing A Little 'White Space'!

The fact is that we need be aware of our need to create a little 'white space' in our lives! We should purposefully provide boundaries, leave some open space and seek to alter life's rhythm! If not, then our lives will be easily overwhelmed, chaos will prevail and our peace will be gone!

Needing A Little 'White Space'!

I have sure felt the need for that lately, so I am re-scripting my life again, making the necessary changes and confidently expecting to profit greatly from the much needed addition of 'white space'!

How about you?

Oh you don't have time just now to answer that?

I understand, I really do ... and I know there is a 'white space' need for you as well!

Try it ... you will like it!!

Loving … Arms Wide Open!

Arms open I have just returned to Brussels after spending two weeks visiting our family in the US. We saw our girls, our parents, brothers & sisters (not everyone sadly, sorry Kathy & Sharon), several of Ruthanne’s aunts & uncles, plenty of cousins (not all of them, Italian family … think ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding‘), loads of friends and most of all Caleb & Luke!!

We took the boys to a baseball game (a victory for the Springfield Cardnials), had a barbeque, a mini family reunion (again think ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’), took a road trip from Nixa, Missouri to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and made lots of memories!

Along the way I did a lot of reminiscing about Kari & Kristi as little girls. We played a lot of silly games together! One was where I would ask them, ’How much do you love me’ and they would stretch their arms out as widely as possible and say with a big smile, ‘We love you this much’!

Loving … Arms Wide Open!

I can assure you that this was so good for my father’s heart and an easy way for them to get … whatever they wanted from me!

In reality, nothing pleases the heart of our Heavenly Father like seeing His children stretch their arms out as widely as possible and say with a big smile, ‘We love you this much’!

Loving … Arms Wide Open!

I can assure you that this is so good for your Father’s heart and an easy way for you to gain His favor and blessing!!

OK now, are you ready for this?

Loving … Arms Wide Open!

On the count of three …

Tarzan & A Pastor!

Tarzan Recently a friend (thanks David Porter) wrote about something his grandson said that made me laugh!

He writes, "My daughter and son-in-law responded with parental pride when six year old, Micah, announced that he wanted to be a pastor like his dad. The next day he asked his mom, though, 'Mom can I be two things?'

His mom assured him that it was possible so he asked her, 'Can I be Tarzan and a pastor when I grow up?'

This provoked alot of laughter and lots of helpful(?) comments from friends and family alike!

Tarzan & A Pastor!

It does sound fun and is a combination that no one I know has ever tried, but I am pretty sure that Micah can not pull it off!

However, I also know this ... that he, like all of us, will have great joy in finding and fulfilling God's intended purpose ... whatever that may be!

The fact is that God has plans for us ... all of us ... and as Jeremiah so powerfully declares these plans are to bless us and not harm us, to give us hope and a future! (Jeremiah 29:11)

Tarzan And A Pastor!

Micah, keep dreaming and more than that dare to be all that God has destined you to be!

The rest of us are following your lead!!

Grab the rope and let's go!!

Every Good And Perfect Gift Comes From Above!

IMG_0398 What a thrill for Ruthanne & I to be at the spiritual dedication for our grandsons, Caleb & Luke!!

My dad & his wife Darlene, my brother Gary & his wife Vickie, our daughter Kari, all drove in to be with us to celebrate this very special moment! Andrew's sister Erin & her daughter Makaylee, who live in town, were also there to be a part of the family group!

These little boys are miracle babies who were born at 29 weeks weighing 2 lbs 13 oz  & 2 lbs 11oz! Caleb has overcome all his issues & Luke is one by one, doing the same!

To present them to God and acknowledge them as gifts from Him was the greatest desire of our hearts! We know that His plans have prevailed for them and their very presence is an expression of that reality!

James 1:17 reminds us that, 'Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows'.

Identical twin grandsons, strength that is equal to my days and the wisdom to recognize Him in all things are just a few of the 'good and perfect gifts' that I cherish!

No doubt you have your own list of equally valued gifts from above! His love for us is ... amazing!

Take the time today to see all that you have been given and to offer a sincere prayer of thanksgiving!

I am squeezing my little gifts, Caleb & Luke, every chance I get!!

Every good and perfect gift comes from above ... knowing that we have a God who never changes spawns a hope that is eternal!

There Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing!

L & C Jean Jackets l Ruthanne and I arrived in Springfield late Wednesday
night and seeing Luke and Caleb, our identical twin grandsons again was ... well overwhelming!

I had only seen them once before, last October and they were very fragile at that point. Luke had his major emercency surgery one day after I arrived, so I actually never saw him with his eyes open.

Now they are so full of life, very active, smiling alot ... and both are little charmers!

In reality over the last seven months we have seen dozens of photos, hooked up the webcam and made hundreds of phone calls but ... to actually hold them, talk to them and cuddle them ... is absolutely amazing!

The fact is, 'There Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing'!

I can tell you for sure that this is true for grandsons and more importantly, it is true for God!

We can hear about Him from others, seek for Him on secondary paths or consider Him from a distance but the fact is, 'There Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing'!

So ... embrace Him, engage with Him and enjoy the reality of Him!

I am loving God and my grandsons ... nice combination!!

Thinking About Legacy And Wondering ...

Concetta Recently Ruthanne's aunt passed away ... at 102 years of age!

Concetta Crognale, like Ruthanne's grandfather & grandmother was born in Italy but came to America to make a new life ... and along the way left us an amazing legacy!

She left us a legacy of faith!

Concetta openly served God, supported her church (she was a charter member of Christian Assembly, Beaver Falls, for 80 years) and shared her faith in loving ways!

She left a legacy of family!

Concetta knew all the joys that a large family can bring and also knew it's pain. She was survived by four daughters, six sons and was the loving grandmother of 30 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren! She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters and an infant son, all of Italy, as well as her husband, a daughter, a daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law, a granddaughter and two grandsons.

She left a legacy of faithfulness!

To the very end she expressed faith in her God, had great peace about His plans/purposes and a joyful song of praise in her heart for Him!

She lived right, loved unconditionally and left us challenged to do the same!

So I am thinking ...

Thinking About Legacy And Wondering .... what do others see?

Thinking About Legacy And Wondering ....what will one day be said of me?

Thinking About Legacy And Wondering .... what mine will one day be?

So ... how about you?

Are you thinking ... about legacy and wondering ...!

* This is the link to an amazing song by Steve Green entitled, 'Find Us Faithful' which is a perfect expression of all that Concetta's life was ... and ours should be!!
